History of Barbados

It is thought that the first inhabitants of Barbados were the Arawak Indians, however when the Europeans arrived on the island it was uninhabited. Although the Portuguese were the first nationality to arrive on the island it was the British who created the first colony in 1627. The colonists main industries were tobacco and cotton, however it was discovered that the sugar industry would be far more lucrative. Slaves were imported from Africa to work on the plantations and sometime after this 90% of the population was black. In 1816 the slaves revolted, and slavery was finally abolished under the British empire in 1834. Barbados became a separate colony in 1885 and was a member of the Federation of the West Indies from 1958 to 1962, the island was granted independence from Britain in 1966. Since independence Barbados has had good and continuing political stability.
