History of Curacao

Alonso de Ojeda (a lieutenant of Christopher Columbus) discovered the island of Curacao in 1499. The island was under Spanish control until the Dutch moved in and gained the island in 1634, with the arrival of the Dutch came the booming slave trade. African slaves were transported from their homes and sold to wealthy plantation owners to work for them. The Dutch managed to regain control from the British in 1815 and in the 1920's and 1930's a massive influx of worldwide immigrants arrived which has led to the island being as multicultural as it is today.
